A Wal-Mart Supercenter has been approved and will be built
adjacent to the US Post Office in Osprey, Florida. On Dec. 17, 2003
the Sarasota County Commission approved the necessary zoning
changes to make this development a reality.
Architectural drawing of what the finished
Wal-Mart in Osprey will look like.
Unlike most "blue box" Wal-Mart stores, the company has worked
closely with the Osprey Civic Association and local residents,
along with developer Henry Rodriguez, (left), to develop a site
plan and store design that will meet the architectural features
needed to make the store fit in with the community. This Wal-Mart will have an upscale appearance.
Below are some renderings and elevations showing what is
planned.
The Sarasota County Commission approved several zoning changes, including
a special exemption to allow for a garden center, at their
meeting on December 17. Only three people spoke in opposition to
the plan.
Not only will the store appear different from virtually every
other Wal-Mart, but the grounds will be buffered on all sides.
The part of the property along US 41 will have a berm topped by
hedges and trees that will screen the parking lot from view.
Light poles in the parking lot will be only 12 feet tall and be
designed not to light up the night sky. The part of the property
to be developed as residential will also be screened by both
walls and landscaping.
Here are some images showing
the current site, the site plan
and proposed changes to existing
traffic patterns.
